This is a couple quite useful tidbits I wanted to pass on for the googling
audience (or whoever else comes along looking for these).
- Free Static IP on Cisco 677 DSL modems - If you are a Cisco 677
owner (particularly with Alltel's ADSL broadband internet access) you can
use the command set ppp wan0 ipcp x.x.x.x on the telnet interface
to get a static IP free of charge. (where x.x.x.x is your current
IP address). I've been up and running for about 3 years now. As
I understand it, when the modem gets reset it requests that address and
in my experience always gets it.
- Opening Ports to the outside on Cisco 67x - To connect a port with
a computer in a network configuration from the Cisco 677 modem do the command
set nat entry add internalip portnum 0.0.0.0 portnum where internalip
is the IP of the computer you'd like the dsl modem to interface to when
requests are made to portnum from visitors on the internet.
- Hosting on Alltel DSL - Due to the Code Red virus, and security
issues alltel has blocked port 80 and 21 on their equipment. You can call
alltel's DSL technical support to get your port 80 and/or 21 opened
for serving. It's very simple, just tell a technician you'd like to put
in a request to open port 80/21 to be accessed from the internet on your
dsl modem.
- To access your Cisco DSL modem open telnet (start>run>"telnet") connect to 10.0.0.1, the password is cisco if it's default. Then do the enable command. cisco is again the password
- This info was hard to find, I just happened across the static IP thing
by total luck, unfortunately DSL reports doesn't seem to allow googlebot
into their forms.
- I have this working with the ancient 2.2.0 firmware on the modem, not sure about any other configurations.

- Speedreading: Chances are you've heard of speedreading. I found
a great guide (it was called Look Ma No hands, a guide to sematic restructuring
or something) to it online and it's host has since been taken off the net.
I have decided to mirror them. I haven't concentrated hard enough to finished
the drills (or even half of them--of three weeks total, ten minutes a day)
but already I have achieved a marked increase in reading speed when I want
and need it.
- The mirror of the Guide does not have to
be read in any particular order. It sort of got jumbled up in the gooogle
backup, I numbered a few of the elements.
- If the author has any objections to this mirror please email me at webmaster@thadk.net.
- The guide was just restored to the web and is available at: http://www.phaedral.com.
